Philadelphia-area Experts & Athletes Speak about Children, Sports and Concussions Monday, April 22nd in Conshohocken

Conshohocken, Pennsylvania – April 19, 2013 – The focus is on youth sports and concussions this coming Monday, April 22nd at a special free symposium,“Children, Sports and Concussions” with notable athletes, physicians, educators, and experts gathering at the Philadelphia Marriott West in West Conshohocken, PA from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Over 200 parents, coaches, educators and administrators have already registered for this free event.  Online registration is still open at http://www.epysa.org/events/children_sports__concussions/.

Among the expert panelists expected to speak are:
• Former Major League Soccer all-star Taylor Twellman, who retired from the game due to concussions and founded the Think Taylor Foundation for traumatic brain injury awareness;
• Former Philadelphia Flyers captain Keith Primeau, who retired from the sport due to concussions and founded StopConcussions.com to promote awareness and research;
• Pediatric concussion specialist Dr. Matthew Grady from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,
• Nationally known lacrosse coach and former professional lacrosse player Tony Resch, who also is the former athletic director at LaSalle College High School;
Cindy Griffin, the women’s basketball head coach at  Saint Joseph’s University;
• NovaCare Rehabilitation athletic trainers Ned Crane and Leanne Edwards;
• And Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Mike Barr.

These expert panelists will discuss understanding brain trauma injury from the perspective of physicians, athletes and coaches.  There will also be a number of youth sports athletes in attendance with their own perspective to share. 

Pennsylvania Senator Pat Browne, who co-sponsored the Safety in Youth Sports Act, will also be on hand to give opening remarks.

The evening’s discussion will be moderated by Emmy Award winning broadcaster and noted Philadelphia-area philanthropist Don Tollefson.

The growing awareness of sports concussions sometimes overlooks our most vulnerable athletes – our children. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer, which represents over 130,000 children competing in soccer in 36 Eastern Pennsylvania counties, is taking a leadership role in addressing the issue of concussions in sport, and invites participants from all sports to attend this important forum.

The event, which is free of charge to the public, will be in the Ballroom of the Philadelphia Marriott West, beginning at 7 p.m. The Philadelphia Marriott West is located at 111 Crawford Avenue in West Conshohocken, PA (19428).
